Blueberry exports from Peru are set to experience more than a two-fold increase this year to reach US$ 35 million, according to Sierra Exportadora president Alfonso Velasquez.

The official from the Ollanta Humala administration noted the export value of this fruit last year stood at US$16.9 million, which was an exponential jump from less than US$ 500,000 in 2012.

“Until early April, shipments worth US$ 5 million had already been registered. And the highest season is between September and October,” he said in statements to Andina news agency.

Moreover, he stressed the United States was main destination for Peruvian blueberries, followed by the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.

Likewise, Velasquez said the Andean nation currently had 500 hectares of the crop, and by 2016 this is likely to increase to 2,600 hectares.

“The blueberry boom allows for small growers to be incorporated in the whole productive chain,” said he. “The international market recognizes its valuable antioxidant properties and its high content of potassium, calcium and ascorbic acid.”

Sierra Exportadora is a state agency tasked with fostering economic growth in Peru with goals ranging from promoting social inclusion and enhancing exports, freshfruitportal.com reported.

The government entity runs a program titled “Peru Berries” aimed at developing the crop, providing commercial consulting, support in forming business plans, and supply chain support for small and medium enterprises in the Andes.
