After four years, technical efforts undertaken by the National Service for Agricultural Sanitation (Senasa) saw concrete results: The phytosanitary requirements for exporting Peruvian berries to Canada have been published, the Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry announced.

Canada and United States are the world's largest fresh berry importers. Thus, access to this market creates a new opportunity for Peruvian producers and exporters, who intend to ship this quality fruit to the Maple-leaf country.
It should be noted the Canadian market involves 36 million consumers.

Sowed hectares

Peru relies on a surface close to 1,000 hectares of berries sowed largely in La Libertad, Ancash and Lima regions.

It is expected to reach 4,000 hectares in the next years, thanks to the country's soils and climate, which are beneficial for producing the fruit highly appreciated by international consumers given its antioxidant powers.

To date, berries are also exported to the U.S., Netherlands, United Kingdom and Hong Kong.
