SMS Sisesat application implemented by Peru’s Ministry of Production (Produce) for monitoring, control and surveillance of fishery activities took the third place during the 2nd Stop Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing Award.

The event was organized by the International Monitoring, Control and Surveillance (MCS) Network for Fisheries-related Activities.

"It recognizes innovations developed for monitoring, control and surveillance of small and large fisheries in the country. This computer application eases the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing," Production Ministry's Supervision and Audit General Head Jesus Barrientos affirmed.

Incorporated into the Satellite Tracking System (Sisesat) by Produce's Directorate General of Supervision and Control, the innovative app stood out among other initiatives presented by governmental authorities from America, Europe, Asia, Oceania and Africa, regional and sub-regional fishing management organizations, international organizations such as Interpol and FAO, fishermen’s organizations, academic research bodies, NGOs and the private sector.

"To date, the application has been used over 13,400 times, enabling accredited Produce inspectors and fishermen to check the last location (latitude, longitude), speed, direction, distance to coast and reference area of their vessels,” said Barrientos.

Such data, he continued, can be used to determine the operative status of satellite devices and to see if fishing vessels venture into prohibited or reserved areas.

Mr. Barrientos and Technology for Monitoring Director Daniel Collachagua received the award at the 5th Global Fisheries Enforcement Training Workshop (5th GFETW), held in New Zealand, and addressed to officials and inspectors involved in monitoring, control and surveillance.
