2010 Nobel Prize in Literature recipient Mario Vargas Llosa led a handover ceremony of more than 7,000 books from his personal collection to a regional library in Arequipa city, where he was born on this day 81 years ago.

The Peruvian writer arrived in the White City on Tuesday morning, joined by his partner Isabel Preysler, his children Alvaro and Morgana, as well as some 40 friends, including Alonso Cueto and Luis Peirano.

The ceremony took place at the courtyard of a colonial mansion, where Arequipa's Cultural Center is located.

After the ceremony, The Time of the Hero's author and his guests are scheduled to attend a lunch hosted by the regional government.

The meal will be served at a well-known picanteria —local eateries that serve traditional cuisine— and will include typical dishes like rocoto relleno, soltero de queso, chicharron de chancho, cuy chactado, among other culinary delights.

In the evening, the Nobel laureate will visit Casa Museo Mario Vargas Llosa (museum) to take part in the premiere of his novels' adaptations.

"The Time of the Hero," "Conversation in the Cathedral," "The Bad Girl," and "The Way to Paradise" are Vargas Llosa's four literary works adapted into plays.

Activities will continue on Wednesday. He is slated to participate in the international forum "Latin America: Challenges and Opportunities," an event on Latin America's democracy and future perspectives.
