The European Union (EU) has funded six Peruvian research and innovation projects developed by national public and private universities, as well as an additional one led by an international organization.

Of the total, five are currently under execution, whereas the remaining two institutions are close to signing the corresponding agreement with respective partners.

Among selected academic institutions are Arequipa's Catholic University of Santa María (UCSM), Lima-based Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP) and National Agrarian University (UNALM).

Such initiative was made possible thanks to Horizon 2020 innovation and investigation program, currently promoted across the country through State-run National Council for Science, Technology and Technological Innovation (Concytec).

Horizon 2020 is considered the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme, relying on a fund worth nearly €80 billion available over 7 years (2014-2020).

The said financial instrument is focused on three main areas: excellent science, industrial leadership and tackling societal challenges.

In this sense, Horizon 2020 aims to ensure Europe produces world-class science, remove barriers to innovation and facilitate access to innovation for public and private sectors.
