Peru's Pisco production set a new historical record by exceeding 10 million liters in 2016, Deputy SME and Industry Minister Juan Carlos Mathews informed within the framework of Saturday's Pisco Sour Day.

The record was possible thanks to domestic campaigns and higher exports.

"Thanks to efforts undertaken by various institutions such as the National Pisco Commission [Conapisco], Pisco in its various presentations [Pisco sour and Chilcano] has become the third-most consumed beverage by Peruvians, behind beer and wine," he said.

Over the recent quinquennium, production of this Peruvian flagship liquor increased significantly; that is, 10.8% annually on average.

"Pisco has been experiencing the greatest upward trend since 2012 [...], so everything suggests that this positive trend will continue in 2017," Mathews affirmed.

Likewise, overseas shipments experienced an important growth.

In this sense, said exports volume saw a 12.6% increase in 2016, namely those shipped to new markets such as India, Israel, Belgium, Norway and the Dominican Republic.

Among main target markets, the United States (+37.8%) and Chile (+13.5%) stood out. They were followed by Spain, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, among others.

Bodegas and Viñedos Tabernero and Destileria La Caravedo led the ranking of the top 10 exporters.
