Peru's non-traditional exports up 14.9% in March 2017

The volume of Peru's non-traditional exports grew 14.9% in March 2017, over the same month the year before, posting a significant surge in fisheries (148.8%) and textile (11.2%) shipments, INEI informed on Thursday.

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) issued the Report on Evolution of Exports and Imports, which relies on data provided by the National Customs and Tax Administration (Sunat).

Non-traditional products that contributed to this growth were calamari, cuttlefish and giant squid (680.1%), whole frozen prawns (227.2%) and shell-on prawn tails (189.1%).

As for textiles, highlights included carded fine alpaca or llama hair (62.5%), knitted undershirts (46.5%), cotton clothing (19.9%) and cotton t-shirts (18.6%), among others.

Nevertheless, a drop was observed in the iron and steel (-11.9%), as well as non-metallic mining (-22.3%) sectors.

Total export volume 

Peru's total exports increased 9.4%, marking nine months of continuous growth.

The prime destination for Peruvian exports was China —accounting for 27.6% of the total— followed by the United States (11.3%), Japan (10.7%), South Korea (5.3%) and India (5.2%).
