Peru’s minister attends ceremony marking birthday of Miguel Grau

Peru’s Defense Minister Pedro Cateriano took part in a commemoration ceremony on the occasion of the 180th anniversary of the birth of Admiral Miguel Grau Seminario, held at the Peruvian Naval Academy in Callao.

The event hosted the President of the Supreme Court of Peru Enrique Mendoza, Peruvian Navy Commander General Carlos Tejada, and Peruvian Army Commander Benigno Cabrera Pino.

Attendees to the ceremony also included Army’s Commander General Ronald Hurtado, Air Force Commander General Jaime Figueroa Olivos, commissioned officers, non-commissioned officers and naval cadets, as well as political, military and diplomatic authorities.

The ceremony took place at 10:00 local time (15:00 GMT) according to a press release issued by the Ministry of Defense. 

Born in Paita, Peru, on July 27, 1834, Miguel Grau was a renowned Peruvian naval officer and hero of the Naval Battle of Angamos during the War of the Pacific (1879–1884). 

He was known as Caballero de los Mares (Spanish for "Gentleman of the Seas") for his chivalry and is an iconic figure for the Peruvian Navy, and one of the most famous merchant marine and naval military leaders of America.
