Peru's Machu Picchu named world's top landmark

World's largest travel site TripAdvisor has announced Tuesday that the famed Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, in southeastern Peru, tops its list of landmark destinations in the world for the second year in a row.
The Unesco World Heritage site and one of the new Seven Wonders of the World ranked first on a list of Top 25 Landmarks and it was followed by Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E, Taj Mahal in Agra, India, Great Cathedral and Mosque in Cordoba, Spain and St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, Italy.

Rounding out the top ten spots were numerous religious sites, including Angkor Wat, in Siem Reap, Cambodia, Bayon Temple, in Siem Reap,Cambodia, Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood, in St. Petersburg, Russia, Gettysburg National Military Park in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and the Ancient City Walls in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

"TripAdvisor travelers have helped identify some of the best attractions around the globe," said Barbara Messing, chief marketing officer for TripAdvisor. "These award-winning landmarks are an ideal starting point for taking in the world's must-see sights."

Travelers' Choice awards honor leading travel spots worldwide "based on the millions of valuable reviews and opinions from TripAdvisor travelers," said the travel website in a statement.

Winners were determined using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews for landmark and park attractions worldwide, gathered over a 12-month period.

Situated 110 km northwest of Cusco, Machu Picchu was previously named top landmark destination in the world according to a similar ranking published in June 2013 by the travel site.

TripAdvisor is a travel guide and research website that helps customers to gather travel information, besides it features reviews and advice on hotels, resorts, flights, vacation rentals, vacation packages, travel guides, among others.
