Peruvian forward Jefferson Farfan is expected not to start the upcoming Bundesliga season with his side Schalke 04 as he requires knee surgery, it was reported Thursday.
Farfan struggled with injuries last term and managed just 19 Bundesliga appearances for the Royal Blues, but still had a hand in 16 goals, scoring nine and providing another seven assists.

The club had hoped the Peru international would be fit for the start of the campaign but general manager Horst Heldt has now revealed Farfan will probably have to undergo surgery to solve the problem.

Heldt told club's official website: "It is assumed that Jefferson needs surgery on his knee. "We have first tried at his request to treat the injury conservatively.

According to clubcall.com Jeff had worked during the summer break in Peru with a physical therapist from Germany. "In this case, however, the desired effect has not arrived. At present we assume he will be missed for a long time".
