Peru's Foreign Trade Minister opens 7th Int'l Asparagus Congress

Peru's Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister, Magali Silva, opened Thursday the 7th International Asparagus Congress, an event aimed at showing the world the importance of asparagus and analyzing the sector's current situation and the vegetable's productive chain.

The event, whose motto is "leading the regional market with innovation and excellence", is scheduled to run through September 19th, 2014 in the Main Auditorium of the Universidad Agraria La Molina, in the nation's capital Lima.

Attending the opening ceremony were Luis Torres, director of Peru’s export and tourism promotion board (Promperu); Carlos Zamorano Macchiavelo, executive director of the Peruvian Institute of Asparagus and Vegetables (IPEH), as well as national and international experts.

Topics to be discussed at the event include plant nutrition, automation of the asparagus industry, genetic improvement and, markets and marketing.

The said congress is expected bring together over 300 participants including producers, exporters, suppliers, academics and leading authorities of the asparagus.

It is worth noting that Peru is the world's largest exporter of asparagus. This vegetable, rich in B vitamins, vitamin C, calcium, and iron, is also one of the top products of agricultural exports in the Andean nation.
