Peru's traditional fish exports to Japan increased by 35.65 percent in the first quarter of 2014 over the same period last year, the Peruvian Japanese Business Council (Cepeja) has said.
According to Cepeja’s President Luis Vega Monteferri, traditional fishing sector totaled US$38 million in revenues.
Likewise, non-traditional fish exports increased by 5.61 percent to a total of US$14 million in the same period of analysis.
Meanwhile, total exports of various industry sectors of both traditional and nontraditional products decreased by 33.32 percent between January and April this year.
Traditional shipments fell by 34.27 percent, and the largest contraction occurred in exports of oil and natural gas (-59.89 percent), followed by mining products (-22.07 percent).
In addition to the fishing industry, exports of traditional agricultural products increased by 13.46 percent, with shipments worth US$1 million in the Jan-Apr 2014 period.
In turn, non-traditional exports plunged by 17.29 percent, due to the slowdown in the metalworking (-59.36 percent), chemical (-57.45 percent), steel and metallurgy (-43.89 percent), agriculture and agribusiness (-27.23 percent) sectors.
