The simplification of procedures and the new regulatory framework on water and sanitation in Peru will help speed up investments in the sector, Housing, Construction and Sanitation Minister Edmer Trujillo said.

The minister listed his portfolio's strategies to give universal access to drinking water by 2021, during the forum "Water and Sanitation Week" held by Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in Panama.

In his speech "Transforming Water and Sanitation Services by 2021," Trujillo made clear that strengthening and updating operators, as well as seeking efficient investors, are the other action lines applied by his sector to provide water and sanitation services to more Peruvian nationals.

"Sanitation service operators like sanitation service providers, municipal governments and administrative boards need to be efficient, specialized, autonomous, and require economic resources as well," he pointed out.

Moreover, he said the sector requires efficient investment to help close water and sanitation services gaps.

Trujillo informed S/28.9 billion (about US$8.84 billion) has been invested between 2009 and 2016 at all government levels, although coverage and quality of service segments have not seen substantial improvement.
