Peru's consumer spending fueled by job growth, improved business climate

The latest signs of recovery in business expectations and pick-up in job growth allow to foreseeing improvement in Peru’s consumption, the Economy and Finance Minister, Luis Miguel Castilla, said Wednesday.

In his address to lawmakers gathered at the chamber of Peru’s Legislature, the minister presented economic-growth boosting measures which are due to be implemented as soon as the bill which embodied them passes through the parliament. 

MEF’s top executive noted his sector released new date showing a strong recovery of expectations in the country’s entrepreneurial segment for the coming six months, while recruitment expectations are also rising throughout the period set to end in December.

“In the last case, figures in August are the highest recorded performance level achieved since March 2013,” said Castilla, adding “These data reflects a greater optimism among economic agents and a clear trend of an increase of levels of recruitment in Peru's job market".

In this regard, he hailed the 3.4 percent expansion of the dependent-sector job in Lima’s metropolitan area in the May-July quarter, thus reflecting a strong improvement in the field of recruitment. "It is an important factor as it promises an enhancement in the country's consumption," Castill said. 

"Nevertheless, the recovery of business expectations requires to be consolidated in the short term, by approving government measures aimed at fostering investment and economic growth,” the Finance minister noted.

Likewise, the top MEF official highlighted the dynamism in the awarding of project through the usage Public Private Partnership (PPP) scheme this year. Peru’s government has awarded large-scale infrastructure projects valued at more than US$ 13.2 billion.
