Peruvian coffee —produced by an organization based in the Valley of the Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro rivers (Vraem)— stood out at the Special Session of the UN General Assembly on the World Drug Problem (UNGASS 2016).

The event was held in New York, U.S. from April 19th-21st, 2016.

Such product was introduced as one of the results from the government-implemented National Anti-Drug Strategy based on alternative development.

This initiative was promoted along with the National Commission for Development and Life without Drugs (Devida).

The high-level Peruvian delegation was composed of President Ollanta Humala, Devida officials, as well as cacao and coffee producer associations' members.

At the said forum, national representatives shared their experience on coca-crop reduction, alternative development and thus confirmed the country's leadership at regional level.

"It was a great opportunity for Peru to participate in this event, where strategies aimed at countering the drug problem were proposed [...]," Peruvian coffee grower Jose Hardy Velasquez Monge expressed.

"On behalf of the country, I shared my experience by presenting coffee as an alternative crop to illicit coca [...]," he added.

Peruvian coffee also drew attention from several dignitaries due to its quality and positive image.
