A government-run project aimed at empowering the Cajamarca region as a major tourism hub in northern Peru is set to begin its second stage by convening public and private actors engaged in the travel-related industry.

The initiative, which is titled “Proturismo”, is promoted by the Cajamarca-based Yanacocha Newmont mining along with the area’s Chamber of Commerce and seeks to foster the institutional strengthening of the tourist sector in the northern Peruvian region.

Speaking to Andina news agency, Luis Cespedez Ortiz, manager of Cajamarca’s leading private business guild, noted the launching of the second stage was adopted after having achieved a success in the implementation of the project’s first stage.

“The new phase will operate with an initial budget of 200 thousand soles (US$ 71,556) which is expected to be provided by Cajamarca’s Los Andes Association (ALAC), an entity being run by the above mining,” the entrepreneur said.

He added, “We are eager to carry what has been set in the first stage in order to become Proturismo into a much more sustainable project over time”.

Cespedez stressed the importance of the tourism activity to drive economic development in Cajamarca as this industry provides livelihood for thousands of families living in along the region.

Likewise, he called for restoring investors’ confidence in the tourist sector’s ability to enhance and bolster the potential of the attractions located in northern Peru.

"In pursuing this aim, it is required to carry out a joint work between the public and private sector," the businessman noted.
