Angela Leyva, the 17-year-old volleyball sensation from Peru, has been crowned Volleywood’s 2013 World Volleyball Idol (Female).
The contest, sponsored but popular volleyball site Volleywood, took place on Facebook. Participants could vote by either liking or sharing photos of the players who were up for the title.

Eight total players were in contention, with four women competing for the top female title, and four men competing for the male title, peruthisweek.com reported.

Volleywood announced the winners earlier today. “After weeks [of] intense voting by amazing volleyball fans from all over the world, we would like to congratulate Angela Leyva and Tsvetan Sokolov as the 2013 MY VOLLEYWOOD WORLD IDOLS,” the site’s administrators wrote on their official facebook page.

“We wish them both the best & we thank them together with the other IDOLS for inspiring our generation to become the BEST in the sport we all love and that is #Volleyball.”

According to Volleywood, Leyva’s victory was the result of a record-breaking vote tally in which the young player received more than one million votes, beating out Alyssa Valdez from the Phillippines, Nootsara Tomkom from Thailand, and Kim Yeon Koung of South Korea.

Tsvetan Sokolov of Bulgaria won the men’s title.
