The value of agricultural exports from Peru totaled US$ 1.1 billion during the first quarter of 2014, representing a 25 percent rise over the same period last year, the country’s Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry (Minagri) has said.
According to the latest numbers released by the sector’s Economic and Statistical Studies Office, the result was driven mainly by an increase in shipments of fresh grapes, quinoa, mangos and preparations used in animal feeding.
The report reveals importers from the United States bought US$ 39 million more of Peruvian products from the year-ago period, followed by Hong Kong (+US$ 34 million), China (+US$ 33 million), Netherlands (+US$ 30 million) and Italy (+US$ 9 million).
Meanwhile, non-agricultural exports accounted for 92.9 percent (US$ 1.02 billion) of the value of all Peru’s agricultural products sold abroad during the January-March stretch, thus posting a growth of 25.3 percent from US$ 820 million, a year ago.
In turn, traditional agricultural products accounted for 7.1 percent (US$ 78 million) of total sales in the quarter ended March, up 21.5 percent from US$ 64 million in the corresponding period last year.
