The first Peru-Chile Binational Cabinet meeting will be held in June 2017, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet announced on Tuesday.
She went on to stress both countries’ agenda comprises three key areas: convergence, dialogue and mutual respect.
Remarks were made after the extended bilateral meeting she and her Peruvian counterpart Pedro Pablo Kuczynski chaired at Chile’s presidential headquarters, Palacio de la Moneda.
“We have established the joint cabinet meeting mechanism, whose first session is slated for June 2017, in Peru, I guess, although that’s to be confirmed,” Bachelet stated.
Chile’s Commander-in-Chief underlined bilateral meetings will be resumed to address areas like economy, trade, mining, science, technology and innovation, energy, border integration, fight against drug trafficking, culture, security, defense, tourism and natural disasters.
The political consultation and coordination mechanism, known as “2 plus 2” talks, might be resumed too, and results on these areas shall be reported to the Binational Cabinet.
The high-ranking official said the audience with Mr. Kuczynski helped reaffirm the permanent dialogue, as well as the strengthening of bilateral ties, mutual trust and transparency between both countries.
“We have made progress with the signing a new extradition treaty, which replaces the one signed in 1932, a memorandum of understanding aimed at establishing a dialogue and cooperation mechanism in terms of human rights, as well as an inter-institutional agreement between both cooperation agencies,” she said.
As for Chile’s willingness to continue promoting free trade, sustainable and comprehensive growth, and human development, Bachelet assured her government has expressed formal support to the OECD accession process of Peru.
On the other hand, she affirmed both countries seek to encourage bilateral electrical interconnection, and reinvigorate talks to achieve the Tacna-Arica and electrical interconnection project and the railway linking these two cities.
