The Peruvian government does not recognize the results of Sunday's elections for a new Constituent Assembly in Venezuela, the Foreign Affairs Ministry affirmed.

As is known, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced a national vote to create a citizens' body called "Constituent Assembly" in order to redraft the constitution.

"This election violates the rules of the Venezuelan Constitution and contravenes the sovereign will of the people represented by the National Assembly," a release read.

Likewise, the document underlined the said ballot infringes the principle of universal suffrage.

"The Government of Peru condemns the violent repression, which has so far caused more than a hundred deaths," it added.

Lastly, the Ministry urged the current Venezuelan administration to restore democratic order in the neighboring country via dialogue.
