United States President Donald Trump on Saturday phoned Peruvian counterpart Pedro Pablo Kuczynski to address the ongoing crisis in Venezuela.

"President Donald J. Trump spoke today with President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski of Peru to address the deteriorating political and economic crisis in Venezuela," the White House said in a brief statement.

"President Trump underscored that the United States will work together with Peru in seeking to improve democratic institutions and help the people of Venezuela," it added.

Protests kicked off in the Bolivarian country last month, once its Supreme Court ruled to constrain the power of the legislative National Assembly.

Although the decision was later overturned, demonstrations did not stop and turned violent. Death toll stands at 37.

By the end of March, the Peruvian Government formalized the withdrawal of its Ambassador to Caracas Mario Juvenal Lopez Chavarri.

The decision came in response to the rupture of democratic order in the fellow South American country.

The Peruvian Government has been a strong critic of the Venezuelan administration led by Nicolas Maduro.

Furthermore, Mr. Kuczynski thanked Mr. Trump for the prompt assistance provided to Peru following natural disasters.

According to the White House, "President Kuczynski expressed his gratitude for President Trump's prompt humanitarian assistance in response to the devastating floods in Peru."

Aid provided by the United States to the Inca nation for emergency response efforts exceeded US$1.8 million as at April 6.

As is known, the Andean country was recently at the mercy of "Coastal El Niño" phenomenon characterized by heavy rains, landslides and floods. They destroyed infrastructure and crops, as well as left many citizens homeless.
