Some 200 couples performed Arequipa-native Wititi dance during the great parade and veneration ceremony to honor Virgen de La Candelaria on Monday.

The delegation was headed by Arequipa region Governor Yamila Osorio and Caylloma province Mayor Romulo Tinta.

The troupe emerging from Colca Valley's province proved why Wititi was recently declared a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Wearing traditional costumes, participants danced along Puno city's streets.

On the eve, the group also participated in the Sunday dance-contest held at Enrique Torres Belon Stadium.

Caylloma Burgomaster thanked organizers for allowing the Arequipa-native delegation to take part in the festival.

Wititi meaning

Arequipa's Wititi is one of the most suggestive and widespread cultural manifestations from the Colca Valley given its elegance and joyousness.

It is performed by couples at main religious festivities taking place during rainy season. Thus, the emblematic performance includes social and ritual symbolism linked to the agricultural production cycle and courtship between young people.

The dance represents the beginning of social life when they establish and strengthen relationships and thus are recognized as adults.

It must be noted Caylloma province is located three hours from Arequipa city if travelling by bus.
