In the following days two representatives of one Latin American's most relevant supermarket chains, Brazilian “Grupo Pão de Açúcar” (GPA), will arrive in Peru.

GPA is interested in acquiring fruits and vegetables harvested in Peru’s Northern La Libertad and Southern Ica regions from the producing companies, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) announced.

According to Minister Magali Silva, the visit will take place during the first week of July.

The meeting was made possible thanks to the work undertaken by Peru's Commercial Office located in Sao Paulo (Ocex Sao Paulo), PromPerú and the Lima-based Asparagus Institute.

Products

Representatives of GPA will meet with Trujillo and Ica cities' producers to engage in talks concerning direct purchases without the need for intermediaries.

Among the to-be-acquired products are: green asparagus, grapes, olives, frozen strawberries and other vegetables, Mincetur affirmed.

Business opportunity

Minister Silva highlighted the sustainable agricultural exports growth.

"Between January and April 2015, these shipments have increased by 21.9% despite lower growth registered in the Brazilian economy," the Minister said.

Between 2013 and 2014 exports of following products expanded: Asparagus (14%), grapes (284%) and olives (90%). Thus, Brazil has become a great business opportunity for Peru, she added.

Competitive Prices

“This is due to the quality of our products and the competitive prices, which lead to opening new sales channels, such as supermarkets,” underlined Silva.

The GPA network comprises over 800 stores in Brazil, which turned it into Latin America's major supermarket group.

It must be noted Mincetur, through its Commercial Office in Sao Paulo, organizes a Business Roundtable in Acre State (Brazil). It will be held in July.

Likewise, the Ministry prepares a mission for buyers, who will visit Peru's Expoalimentaria fair in August; the biggest food industry exhibition, which takes place once a year.
