Peruvian Minister of Foreign Affairs Eda Rivas has said that her country would support any peaceful solution to the problems in Syria, which has been accused of using chemical weapons against its own people.

Rivas explained that the Peruvian government has always rejected all forms of armed intervention that are not backed by the United Nations.

"Peru has always been respectful of international law and order and we have expressed our solidarity with the people of Syria (…) Any action that means solving Syria’s problems without armed conflict is supported by Peru," she said on Monday.

Rivas added that there are very few Peruvian citizens who live in Syria and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is making every possible effort to find out their current personal conditions and support them any way it can.

Though Peru does not have diplomatic offices in Syria, Rivas told reporters that other Peruvian diplomatic resources in the region will be used if needed. Peru has an embassy in Egypt, as well as honorary consulates in Jordan and Lebanon.
