Peru will host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders' Meeting in 2016, Foreign Minister Rafael Roncagliolo announced Thursday.

"Next year it will be held in Indonesia, in China in 2014, in the Philippines in 2015, and in Peru in 2016 (...) Today APEC ministers have unanimously approved the proposal to hold APEC in Peru that year," he said.

During his trip to Vladivostok, Russia, where he's attending the 20th APEC Summit, Roncagliolo noted that some countries wanted to go earlier to Peru.

"However, President Humala said it would be important for the new government to start its administration with an APEC summit, in order to continue with efforts to join the Pacific Rim," Roncagliolo added.

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, or APEC, is the premier forum for facilitating economic growth, cooperation, trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific region.
