Teacher performance assessment cannot be dispensed with, and the push for quality education must remain on Peru's agenda, President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski said Tuesday.

Remarks were made after inaugurating the second session of 5th GORE-Executive meeting in Lima.

"The assessment process —which seems to be the target of the [teachers'] strike— cannot be omitted. Some changes can be made, but that's what we need to discuss," he was quoted as saying.

Peru's top official said his Government is willing to negotiate, but there is one thing they cannot change: the country's strive towards better education.

On Monday, strikers declined to sign an agreement with Peru's Education Ministry (Minedu), as they refused to go through a performance assessment process.

On the other hand, Mr. Kuczynski has reiterated his full support to Education Minister Marilu Martens, summoned by the opposition-led Congress to account for measures to end ongoing teacher strikes.

"I maintain my support to the [Education] Minister and to all Ministers without a doubt," the Head of State affirmed last Thursday while supervising post-disaster reconstruction works in northern Piura region.

At that time, the statesman underlined government actions to improve public school teachers' working conditions.
