Peru has assumed the lead in the region in boosting the process towards sealing trade deal among World Trade Organization's (WTO) member economies at the ongoing 9th ministerial conference of the forum.
"Peru currently holds one of three Vice-Presidencies at the worldwide organization, allowing the country to represent Latin American and the Caribbean in the WTO's summit which seeks to conclude the Doha Round negotiations," said Magali Silva, head of Peru's Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry (Mincetur).

The minister noted the WTO's ministerial conference held in Bali, Indonesia, seeks to reach an agreement on the so-called "Bali package" which includes three major topics, the first being the reduction of export subsidies by developed countries.

Furthermore, other major issues discussed are related to food security, which is a proposal from the emerging countries; as well as development, access and trade facilitation.

In this regard, the government's top official is holding a series of meetings with representatives from 160 member countries of the WTO to unlock the world trade liberalization which could add nearly US$1 trillion to the world economy.

Silva participated in previous meetings in the run-up to the summit in order to discuss the status of the negotiations of the Doha Round and the Bali package.
