Peru grabbed two gold and two silver medals at the Mathematical Olympiad of the Southern Cone held in Ecuador on August 13-21.
Thus, Peru ended first among South American countries given its exceptional performance at said competition.
The national delegation was composed of high-school students: Daniel Benavides, Diego Lazaro, Renzo Balcazar and Joseph Altamirano.
Benavides (15 years old) grabbed gold by getting a perfect score at both stages of the Olympiad. It must be noted this was the third consecutive triumph for him in 2017.
Lazaro, 16, claimed his first gold medal, whereas Balcazar and Altamirano —both aged 14— grabbed silver.
Peru's Education Ministry supported the national squad by covering their travel expenses to attend said competition.
The Inca nation has been leading this Mathematical Olympiad for the last 12 years. Only in 2013 and 2015, Peru ended second.
About the event
The Mathematical Olympiad of the Southern Cone aims to promote the development of young scientists, as well as to support the cultural and intellectual exchange of South American teenagers in a competitive environment.
