Peru's second anchovy fishing season is set to generate close to US$900 million in exports, the National Fisheries Society (SNP) estimated.

"This second season will yield US$900 million in exports for the country, which in turn generates other value chains in related industries, higher incomes for workers, more investments and increased port activity," SNP President Elena Conterno informed.

Conterno also highlighted the country nearly completed its fishing quota for the season, which officially concluded last Friday.

"We have closed the second fishing season catching virtually 100% of our 2-million-ton anchovy quota, so we can say mission accomplished," she stressed.

The entire catch is currently being processed into fishmeal and fish oil, to be exported for the most part.

2017 Forecast

On the other hand, the SNP head referred to projections for this year.

"We expect 2017 to be a more typical year, with the normalization of ocean climate conditions and correction of regulatory standards issued during the previous administration," she estimated.

Likewise, Conterno noted the Production Ministry projects fishing to surge 60% this year.

"We have high expectations about the recovery of anchovy and giant squid fishing, the country's two main fisheries," she said.
