Peruvian Minister of Economy and Finance Alonso Segura noted that, during the raw materials high price cycle, the region’s country that cut poverty and inequality the most was Peru, which also showed the highest growth rate.

“We have managed to reduce inequality while growing, something that is quite hard to achieve […] Peru has been one of the countries that experienced greatest growth and reduced poverty and inequality the most,” he said in his speech at the international conference: “Promote Growth through Effective Policies.”

As for poverty, the Andean nation has managed to reduce it by more than 35 percentage points over the last decade, “a significantly higher level than that of the rest of the region.”

Nevertheless, he said the time of good commodities prices has passed, and reforms must be adopted to keep on growing and reducing social gaps.

“For example, we should be aimed at increasing the availability of credits given that, despite the great progress, regional levels remain below 50%,” he indicated.

He said another point to work on is related to infrastructure investment. “We have to continue investing in good infrastructure, which will allow the country to increase its per capita GDP.”
