United States Agency for International Development's Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA) will contribute a total of US$2.4 million to support residents of Peru's natural-disaster-hit areas.
As is known, the Inca nation was at the mercy of
"Coastal El Niño" phenomenon in the January-March period. The event was characterized by heavy rains, landslides and floods, which left thousands of citizens homeless.
The contribution —channeled through Peruvian NGO Save the Children— will benefit 6,000 citizens living in northern La Libertad and Lambayeque regions.
The aid is aimed at providing water, sanitation and shelter.
Announcement was made by U.S. Ambassador to Lima Brian A. Nichols during a ceremony held on Monday in Trujillo city (La Libertad).
The event featured Peru's Development and Social Inclusion Minister Cayetana Aljovin and La Libertad Governor Luis Valdez Farias, among other local authorities.
The North American nation has already donated US$6 million to tackle emergencies caused by "Coastal El Niño" climate phenomenon, the U.S. Embassy in Lima revealed on Monday.
