Peru: Public schools to be reinforced against El Nino Phenomenon

The National School Infrastructure Program (Pronied), attached to the Ministry of Education of Peru, announced State-owned educational centers infrastructure based in six regions of the country will be reinforced.

The measure has been taken, in order to tackle the impacts of El Nino climate phenomenon and the 2015-2016 rainfall period.

Thus, a group of Pronied technicians carries out inspection works on public schools infrastructure located in regions: Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Cajamarca and Ica. Local and regional government officials will join the task.

To date, educational centers have been identified in regions: Tumbes (10), Piura (23), Lambayeque (12), La Libertad (8), Cajamarca (13) and Ica (9), which infrastructure has been catalogued as: Vulnerable to the impacts of the natural phenomenon.

Likewise, Pronied and regional governments will identify safe areas where to place prefabricated classrooms, with the aim of moving students away from schools to be hit by heavy rain.

To date, 46 safe zones have been located, where 361 prefabricated classrooms will be distributed.

According to Pronied, these actions are comprised in the series of works to be undertaken before the phenomenon hits the area. During the event, monitoring drainage works will be carried out.
