Peru will deliver quality infrastructure and a competitive sports level for the 2019 Pan American Games in capital city Lima, President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski assured on Friday.

The Head of State expressed satisfaction with progress made in organizing the Games following the presentation of "Top Peru 2019," the team comprising national athletes who will represent the Andean country during the said sports event.

During the activity, held at Lima-based National Sports Village (Videna), the statesman reiterated his firm commitment and ongoing support to sports.

In this sense, he underlined the role of sports within the current context of political turmoil.

"We support life and sports. Thus, we have always backed the idea of hosting the Pan American Games here in Lima […]," the President highlighted.

Addressing the athletes, the 78-year-old leader said he was "impressed" by Videna's facilities.

He also reminisced about his days playing squash, a sport he practiced until he was 77 years of age, when he had to give it up due to a tight agenda.

The event featured a karate-kumite demonstration by Toronto 2015 Pan American Games medalists Alexandra Grande and Carlos Eduardo Mendoza.

On behalf of the team, Grande thanked the top official for his commitment to sports and promised they would give their all during the competitions.

Lastly, Mr. Kuczynski was invited to cast his vote for the 2019 Pan American Games mascot.
