12:31 | Lima, Mar. 28.

Piura region, the worst hit by recent thundershowers and floods lashing Peru, will be declared in state of emergency, President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski informed on Tuesday.

Announcement was part of a video update recorded while on his way to the northern region.

The Peruvian Constitution stipulates the Head of State —prior agreement with the Council of Ministers— can declare the state of emergency in case of disruption of peace or internal order, catastrophe or critical circumstances affecting the nation.

The statesman noted the government is sending rescue teams to assist the crowds of people displaced by disasters.

He added a temporary shelter will be planned to accommodate victims until more suitable homes can be built.

Once in Piura, Mr. Kuczynski will receive the National Emergency Operations Center's (COER) latest report on damages recorded to date.
