A total of 156 sixth-grade students from several intercultural bilingual schools across the country met with President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski at the Government Palace in Lima on Thursday.

The meeting took place at the presidential residence gardens.

Thrilled to meet their leader, boys and girls told him they came from educational institutions on the coast, the Andes and the jungle.

For his part, Mr. Kuczynski encouraged them to continue studying so as to become competent professionals and good human beings.

The reception was joined by Prime Minister Mercedes Araoz and Education portfolio head Idel Vexler.

This group of students has participated in Tinkuy 2017 —a national meeting of native, Afro-Peruvian and culturally distinctive children, organized by the Ministry of Education.

Year after year, Tinkuy gathers sixth-grade students from indigenous and Afro-Peruvian communities to exchange their experiences and knowledge in the capital city.

Scheduled for September 24-30, this edition sees students from 14 indigenous communities who are bilingual in Spanish and their native language including Ashaninka, Aimara, Awajun, Achuar, Ticuna, Yanesha, Kakataibo, Shawi, Jaqaru, Harakbut, Bora, Shipibo-Konibo, Amazon Kichwa and Quechua.
