Peru President joined Colombia's peace signing ceremony

19:11 | Cartagena (Colombia), Sep. 26.

Led by Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, a Peruvian delegation attended the peace deal signing between Colombia's government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in Cartagena de Indias.

The ceremony marked the official deal signing between President Juan Manuel Santos and FARC Chief Rodrigo Londoño.

This final agreement is the result of years of negotiations aimed at putting an end to the military conflict which had extended during 52 years. It was reached on August 24, 2016.

Colombians are anxious to end a conflict that has drawn in various left- and right-wing armed groups and drug traffickers across the decades, leaving 260,000 people dead and 45,000 missing, AFP reported.

Such agreement represents a positive impact in terms of peace and security for Latin America.

Held at Julio Cesar Turbay Convention Center's esplanade, the event was also attended by Heads of State of Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Chile, Guatemala, Argentina, Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic.

Likewise, World Bank Group Chairman Jim Yong Kim and King Emeritus of Spain Juan Carlos I were at the site.

Foreign Affairs Minister Ricardo Luna, Foreign Affairs Deputy Minister Nestor Popolizio, as well as Peruvian Ambassador to Colombia Ignacio Higueras comprised Peru's presidential entourage.

Earlier, the Head of State attended a religious ceremony offered by his Colombian counterpart. It was held at San Pedro Claver Church, located in the city’s historic center.

The 77-year-old and his entourage will head back to Lima tonight.

As is known, Mr. Kuczynski arrived in Cartagena Colombia last Sunday.
