Peru's President Ollanta Humala emphasized his administration prioritizes the protection of Peruvian citizens abroad, a Ministry of Foreign Relations-driven policy.

Remarks were made after saluting the Ministry on the 194th Anniversary of its creation.

"My administration will continue to give the highest priority to the protection of Peruvian citizens abroad, aligned with our objective to boost development with social inclusion," the top official underlined through a message sent to the Chancellery on the occasion.

Thus, he made a call upon the Foreign Affairs staff to "redouble the effort" aimed at approaching Peruvian citizens and to offer the best service possible.

"During these nearly 200 years of history, the Foreign Affairs Ministry professionals have worked in favor of defending and promoting the main interests of the country. Today, I exhort you to renew your commitment and to maintain the high and well-earned international prestige with patriotism, loyalty and professionalism deserved by the prudent foreign policy management," he indicated.

The Head of State emphasized the said Ministry contributes with the experience "of a professional and institutionalized diplomatic service" "that must find in its modernization" the possibility of adjusting to this new century’s requirements.

"To date, Peruvian diplomacy also promotes a proper platform for [engaging in] trade and investment with our intra and extra regional partners" the President pointed out.

In this sense, Mr. Humala congratulated the Chancellery for corresponding work carried out in the recent Pacific Alliance Summit held in Paracas city (Ica region) on July 1-2. It must be noted Peru currently holds the Pacific Alliance Presidency. The said bloc -also composed of Mexico, Colombia and Chile- aims at reaching a deep integration area based on the free circulation of goods, services, capital and people.

Likewise, the portfolio’s contribution towards reaching the objectives of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s Conference of the Parties (COP 20) -held in Lima last December- was also highlighted by Peru’s top official.

"The challenge towards next year will be organizing the electoral process [abroad] transparently and efficiently,” he told.

The Ministry will also be in charge of setting up meetings comprised in the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum, since the South American nation will host the said event in 2016.

Another challenge will be organizing the 14th Session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Ministerial Conference scheduled to take place next March.
