The Conference of the Parties (COP20) held in Lima set a major milestone and represents an important advancement, which will enable mankind to reconcile with the planet and provide opportunities to next generations, expressed today Peru’s President, Ollanta Humala.

At a press briefing, which took place at Lima’s Government Palace, the Head of State highlighted the Lima Call for Climate Action. The document had been approved by COP20 member parties in the wee hours of Sunday morning.

The approval will enable to set the proper framework for negotiations at next year’s COP21 to be held in Paris, the President claimed.

COP20 has been an “important step”, a "fundamental advancement to reach Paris", expressed Mr. Humala.

“This has been an important step in the fight against global warming,” he told reporters.

Peru’s top official pointed out the agreement, which seeks to establish joint, but differentiated responsibilities for developed and developing countries regarding greenhouse gas emissions.

According the President, developed countries are more responsible for greenhouse gas emissions, if compared to developing nations.

The Green Climate Fund totaled US$ 10.2 billion during the meeting held in Lima, underlined the President. It surpassed the initial US$10 billion goal set. The Fund is a financial mechanism created to enable developing countries to adapt and mitigate climate change.

Mr. Humala made a call to nations in order to make the fund “immediately usable.”

Success in the COP20 organization process, which reunited delegates from 194 countries, was also highlighted by Peru’s top official.

More than 14,000 visitors arrived to Peru for the event, he calculated.

The gathering has been the most important meeting in the last decades, he confirmed.

Mr. Humala also remembered answering a phone call from UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, on Sunday to congratulate the efforts undertaken by the Peruvian government to organize the COP20 event.
