Peru's government maintains a cautious and neutral position to ensure transparency during the current electoral period, President Ollanta Humala ratified on Tuesday.

"As President, I do not get involved in electoral matters. For the sake of transparency, I maintain a neutral position," Mr. Humala said from Cusco region.

However, he stressed his right to give an opinion, whenever a State policy, in favor of the national well-being becomes threatened, as is the case of the environmental policy.

"We do not endorse illicit activities, we support artisanal mining. Thus, mechanisms have been set up to ensure mining formalization for the benefit of micro-miners, but we do not endorse the illicit activity [...]," the top official stressed.

"We must understand that if we want to preserve forests and the environment, there has to be a balance between extractive and environmental conservation activities," he added.

The Head of State made remarks during the inauguration ceremony of an educational center located in La Convencion province.

Mr. Humala was joined by Education Minister Jaime Saavedra and other local authorities.

It must be noted Peruvians will go to the polls on June 5th to elect a new President in the run-off election between Pedro Pablo Kuczynski and Keiko Fujimori.
