The espionage case conducted by three Peruvian non-commissioned naval officers, ordered by Chile has been considered "overcome," Peru’s President Ollanta Humala affirmed.

The announcement was made after the Peruvian government received a "satisfactory" response from the Chilean President Michelle Bachelet on the matter.

In a televised address to the nation, the Head of State recognized the "constructive" and open-to-dialogue attitude shown by the Chilean government through the response issued to Peru concerning the affair.

Thus, the President gave the order to gradually restore the diplomatic relations with Chile. Among the steps are: Enabling the Peruvian Ambassador to return to his post in Santiago.

“I want to note there have been high-level exchanges with Chile after receiving its second note. Such exchanges are based on a shared willingness to overcome this current situation,” he said.

As a consequence of such exchanges and showing strong attitude of the State, he said the espionage case is considered overcome.

“I am convinced that having assumed a firm and patriotic attitude in defense of national interests, in addition to the high value Peru attributes to the relationship with neighboring countries, has resulted in the materialization of a satisfactory outcome to the current situation,” he stated.

Likewise, he recognized Michelle Bachelet’s constructive attitude and dialogue approach by deploring the acts in a bid to continue moving forward “towards the cooperation and integration path of our peoples.”

As the situation has been overcome, the Peruvian President highlighted how important is for Peru to implement an active policy aimed at building mutual confidence both at the official level and among the civil society.

“I also want to insist on the idea of moving forward in a future bilateral agenda that can benefit both nations, and the idea of reinforcing the joint work carried out by the two countries in terms of regional participation and global coordination,” he added.

With the satisfactions provided by Chile, the government of Peru has concluded this unfortunate situation, which vanished old practices that have been negative for bilateral relations.

“In this regard, I have decided to gradually restore relations with Chile to the level they were at before these unfortunate events occurred; and the first step towards this goal is to return the Peruvian Ambassador to that country,” he pointed out.
