20:13 | Panama City, Apr. 10.

Peru’s President Ollanta Humala participates in the opening ceremony marking the beginning of the Summit of the Americas’ Seventh Edition held in Panama.

The ceremony is held at the Anayansi Theather (Panama City).

Upon arrival, President Humala was welcomed by his counterpart, Juan Carlos Varela Rodriguez and his wife, Lorena Castillo.

The Seventh Edition of the Summit of the Americas has kicked off today and will come to an end tomorrow. The event runs under the logo: "Prosperity with Equity: The Challenge of Cooperation in the Americas."

Humala Tasso flew to Panama City on the presidential airplane joined by Peru’s Foreign Affairs Minister Ana Maria Sanchez, who has recently assumed Gonzalo Gutierrez’ post.

The trip took place after he received authorization from the Congress to leave the country from April 10 to 13 and, therefore, take part in such an important summit.

The event brings together Heads of State and Government of the Americas and has been sponsored and organized by the Organization of American States (OAS) since 1994.

The presidential meeting seeks to enhance the region’s dialogue and integration, as well as broaden cooperation space among the countries in the Americas.

President Humala will hold bilateral meetings with other Heads of State and representatives from international organizations.

The participation of Cuba’s Raul Castro and U.S. Barack Obama in the summit has caused great expectation following the announcement of new diplomatic relations between the two countries, which were broken for decades.

It should be noted Peru will host the Eighth Summit of the Americas in 2018.
