Peru presents anti-drug strategy at OAS meeting

Peru participates in the 61st Regular Session of the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) of the Organization of American States (OAS), set to adopt agreements to address new drug-consumption trends.

National Commission for Development and Life without Drugs (Devida) head Carmen Masias attends this session that pays special attention to young offenders and specialized training on anti-drug intelligence operations in the Western Hemisphere.

Masias' agenda also includes an audience with CICAD Executive Secretary, Ambassador Adam Namm, in order to assess new prospects for cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking.

The Peruvian delegation comprises representatives from Foreign Affairs Ministry, Public Ministry, Judiciary, Armed Forces and National Anti-Drug Agency (Dirandro). 

Likewise, Masias will hold bilateral meetings with U.S. high-ranking government officials engaged in the war against drugs.

Devida's representative will present the National Anti-Drug Strategy (2017-2021) thematic areas. The aim is to identify new forms of international cooperation against drugs to make it more efficient.

She is expected to meet Ambassadors William R. Brownfield and Luis E. Arreaga, leaders at the Department of State's Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), and the Acting Assistant Administrator for the U.S. Agency for International Development's (USAID) Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) Sarah-Ann Lynch.

The Peruvian delegation will gather with Office of National Drug Control Policy's (ONDCP) head, the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations/Low-Intensity Conflict and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Counternarcotics and Global Threats Caryn C. Hollis, as well as DEA's Acting Director Chuck Rosenberg.

Composed of 34 member States representatives, CICAD aims to strengthen human and institutional capacities to reduce trafficking, production and use of illicit drugs.
