Prime Minister Fernando Zavala on Thursday decorated eight police officers who demonstrated courage and efficiency in combating crime.

Decoration was bestowed upon Lorenzo Machaca —a non-commissioned officer who took down the Independencia shooting perpetrator— and other seven police officers.

Held at Interior Ministry's headquarters, the ceremony awarded officers who captured bank robbers in Lima's Chorrillos district, as well as those involved in other important arrests.

Officer Machaca shot down Eduardo Romero Naupay, a street vendor who had murdered four people at a mall in Independencia district.

Second non-commissioned officer Erasmo Roger Fernandez Mamani was granted a decoration for bringing down three thieves who attempted robbery in a shared taxi back in January.

Both Machaca and Fernandez were on their scheduled day off when the events occurred.

The policemen were granted a gun and bulletproof vests as an incentive to strengthen the country's security. They received congratulations from two kids: a disabled boy and a girl, who brought them flowers.

Moreover, the Interior Ministry praised Captain Williams Cesar Asenjo Hernandez and non-commissioned officers Edwin Victor de la Torre Canales, Juan Jose Vinces Olivares, Jose Espiritu Zambrano, Jonathan Delgado Quijada and Erik Joel Porras de la Cruz.

The ceremony took place in the presence of Interior Minister Carlos Basombrio, Chief General of the National Police Vicente Romero Fernandez and senior police officers.
