Legislative powers authorized by Congress to strengthen the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) constitute a move towards developing a State's investigative capacity, Prime Minister Fernando Zavala affirmed today.

"We need to be confident it constitutes a step forward in building a State that has and properly manages investigation capacities," he said.

The high-ranking official highlighted UIF's relevance, stressing Parliament consensus within the legislative-package framework. In this sense, having a fast system "proves fundamental."

Powers to rule by decree will provide information for investigations' early stages, so as to build solid cases and processes, unlike existing ones lacking solid ground.

U.S. highlights UIF

As is known, U.S. Ambassador to Peru Brian A. Nichols previously underlined Peru's need to bolster the UIF to fight transnational crime, drug-trafficking and money laundering.

The diplomat also pointed out UIF strengthening is important to become an OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development) member, as well as for Peru-U.S. tax relations and the fight against transnational crime.

In this respect, the Senior Foreign Service official noted "there is no way to continue this fight without a strong, empowered and effective UIF."
