The number of foreign tourists arriving in Peru will double to 7 million by 2021, Prime Minister Fernando Zavala projected.

As is known, 3.5 million foreign visitors arrived in the Inca country last year.

"By the bicentennial [2021], we will manage to double the number of international tourists, increase revenue generated by international tourism and expand the number of domestic tourism trips by 50%," he affirmed.

Zavala expressed the Government is committed to tourism, since the country has earned a privileged status, given its exceptional cultural heritage and vast biodiversity.

"We want to expand benefits generated by tourism. Thus, we will generate new development poles in different regions, alongside an investment promotion policy and an effective tourism promotion strategy," he added.

To do this, the Prime Minister announced the execution of following measures:

1. Fostering formalization of tourism service providers through an incentive program, working alongside regional and local governments.

2. Addressing pending issues such as the construction of Jorge Chavez international airport’s second runway and terminal expansion, as well as improving different regional airports.

3. Promoting the arrival of new airlines, increasing frequency of Peru-bound flights and creating inter-regional flights comprising routes: Cusco-Chiclayo, Chiclayo-Arequipa, Chiclayo-Jaen and Iquitos-Cusco.
