Peru's Prime Minister Fernando Zavala said the motion of confidence presented to Parliament is intended to guarantee education reform and governability policies.

Censuring previous Education Minister Jaime Saavedra and preparing to do so with Marilu Martens not only threaten the education policy, he said, but the work undertaken by the Cabinet as a whole.

"This crucial reform is being threatened by radical groups linked to the darkest chapters of our history. We cannot fall into extremists' game, let alone give them a minister as a trophy," Zavala expressed as he spoke at Congress.

The chief minister explained that his request for a vote of confidence occurs as provided by the Constitution passed by the political group controlling Congress today.

Peruvians are paying attention to the way the Executive and Legislative branches address important issues such as the education policy, he continued.

This crucial approach benefits millions of students across the country, and Peruvians —he said— are not willing to move backward.

On Wednesday, the Peruvian Government decided to submit a confidence motion on behalf of its Council of Ministers, following Fuerza Popular party's decision to proceed with a censure motion against Education Minister Marilu Martens.
