Peru plans to bring internet to 70 rural locations

Peru's Ministry of Transport and Communications has announced the start of bidding for the Amazon Integration Project Loreto-San Martin and the Terrestrial Telecommunications Network, providing broadband to 70 rural communities in the Loreto Region.

The contract, funded by the Telecommunications Investment Fund (Fitel), will be awarded on December 12, 2013, reports Telecompaper.com.

The aim is to implement a high capacity terrestrial broadband network between Iquitos and Isla Santa Rosa near the border of Colombia, Brazil and Peru, in order to provide public telecommunications services and intranet.

The contract winner will be expected to provide fixed telephony in payphone mode at 26 locations, as well as internet access in 54 towns and 88 public institutions.
