Peru's Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Jose Hernandez stressed that heavy rains —recently unleashed in Piura— had not posed a negative impact on agricultural products from said northern region.

As is known, the Andean country is currently at the mercy of the onslaught of nature.

The fact that huge amounts of said products had been shipped before rains started contributed to positive results.

"Luckily, heavy showers fell after grapes had already been exported abroad. Likewise, mango and lemon seasons had concluded before rains began," he told Andina news agency.

However, organic bananas were mainly affected due to the lack of access to roads.

"A great number of organic bananas has been transported by tractors. As I previously said, the major problem was not production, but transportation," he concluded.

Agro-exports

Peru's agro-exports totaled US$516 million in January 2017, up by 6% from the same month last year.

Natural products are currently traded in more than 80 countries around the globe.

It must be noted agricultural shipments totaled a record US$5.79 billion in 2016, up 9.6% from the previous year.
