More than 5,000 Venezuelan citizens in a vulnerable situation have applied for Peru's Temporary Resident Permit (PTP), which validates holders' regular immigration status in the Inca nation, the Migrations office reported on Tuesday.

Three months into PTP's coming into effect, the Andean country has granted the permit to over 70% applicants, thus facilitating Venezuelan migrants' formal incorporation into Peruvian society.

It is worth noting the measure was regarded "an example for the region" in terms of humanitarian actions by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).

PTP holders are allowed to study, work, access health services, open a bank account and pay taxes under Peruvian law.

In this sense, Migrations head Eduardo Sevilla affirmed the measure is part of the Peruvian migration policy's humanitarian approach.

"We are not indifferent to the drama facing Venezuelan citizens. Just as they opened their doors to thousands of Peruvians, who emigrated in the late [19]70s and during the 80s, today they find a solidary response in President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski's government," he pointed out.

Precisely, a significant number of PTP beneficiaries are the children of said migrants, now returning to their parents' homeland to study, work and develop their life projects.

Only Venezuelan citizens who were in Peruvian territory before February 2 are eligible to apply for PTP. Applicants must have entered the country legally, and must not have national/international criminal or judicial records.

PTP applicants need to fill in an online form, pay a S/41.90 (about US$12.75) fee, provide a criminal and judicial record check, as well as a copy of their ID documents.
