3.16 million Peruvian households get Internet access; last year, some 600,000 families connected to the network from home, the Supervisory Agency for Private Investment in Telecommunications (Osiptel) reported results from a survey.

According to Osiptel's Telecommunications Service Residential Survey (Erestel), conducted in the period comprised between October 2013 and November 2014, 600,000 families connected to the network from their houses in 2014.

The result is due to a larger service expansion in the urban sphere. Meanwhile, in rural areas it was boosted by a remarkable competition and the entry of new operators, which provide mobile and home phone services, Osiptel President Gonzalo Ruiz explained.

Population's desire to access new telecommunications technology was an important factor for Internet expansion at Peruvian homes.

The survey results show Internet access in Peru -through mobile and home connections- climbed from 19.8% to 39.5% in the period comprised between 2012 and 2014.

The increase was especially registered in Lima Metropolitan Area, since only 54.9% of the population had Internet access in 2013, whereas 61% was granted a paid connection a year later.

Internet access expanded from 32.9% to 38.7% in the rest of the urban sphere; and from 5.2% to 13.5% in the rural sphere.

It must be noted that 14,600 households were surveyed in Peru.
